The HamSphere Challenge System - A New Era![]() For years, the Top-1000 leaderboard drove activity on HamSphere 3.0 and 4.0 but it also created friction. Aggressive DX hunters sometimes chased newcomers away. Operators felt pressured to operate nonstop just to maintain their rank. That era is over. The new HamSphere Challenge System is here, and it changes everything. The Challenge System is a completely new way to explore, compete and achieve on your own terms. It's designed to replace the old Top-1000 concept with something fairer and more enjoyable for both experienced DXers and brand new operators. What Makes Challenges DifferentUnlike the single global leaderboard that dominated the old system, Challenges offer multiple goals, multiple paths to success, and multiple ways to participate. Here's how they compare:
How It Works
Challenges run quietly in the background during your normal operating sessions. Each Challenge has its own card showing clear scoring rules, current leaderboard, your personal progress, award diploma preview, and time remaining if applicable. There are two types of Challenges: Open Challenges - Everyone participates automatically based on their QSOs. Examples include working 100 countries on 20m, logging 500 CW contacts, or achieving 50,000km total distance in a month. League Challenges - Registered participants only. These are more structured competitions like Summer VHF Sprint League, European 40m Club Championship, or QRP DX Challenge with maximum 10W power. Scoring FlexibilityChallenges can reward many different aspects of operating:
Become a Challenge ManagerAny HamSphere operator can create and manage their own Challenge. The process is straightforward:
Imagine the possibilities. A CW club creates a monthly Morse sprint. A VHF enthusiast launches a 6m propagation challenge. A regional group organizes a Work 50 US States competition. A contest club runs a year-long DX marathon. The opportunities are endless.
Beginner-Friendly DesignUnlike the intimidating Top-1000 list, Challenges are designed to welcome everyone:
Live NowThe Challenges System is active and growing. Visit the Challenges page to browse active challenges, check current leaderboards, see available diplomas, and submit your own Challenge idea. Link: https://hs50.hamsphere.com/challenges The HamSphere Challenge System represents a fundamental shift in how we recognize achievement and encourage participation. It's competitive without being cutthroat. It's strategic without being stressful. And it's open to everyone from the newest HS callsign to the most experienced DXer. Welcome to the new era of HamSphere operating. The challenge is on! In July 2025, we launched HamSphere 5.1, the most significant platform upgrade since the introduction of HamSphere 5.0. One year later, HamSphere 5.1 has matured into the most advanced and stable version of the system to date, delivering cleaner DSP audio, enhanced AGC response, improved propagation realism, and a far more responsive operator experience. Enhanced HF RealismThe entire DSP and signal processing chain was refined during the 5.1 cycle, resulting in more natural receiver dynamics and clearer audio separation across all HF bands. Operators now experience smoother AGC behavior, improved weak signal readability, and more authentic band behavior during changing propagation conditions. Several long-standing plugin and UI issues were also resolved. Modules such as the Newsline Player and DX Propagation tools were restored and modernized, while numerous stability fixes improved overall usability throughout the platform. The Revolutionary Hub Distribution SystemOne of the biggest technological breakthroughs in HamSphere 5.1 has been the introduction of the new global Hub Distribution System. This system completely redesigned how audio and operator streams are distributed between servers around the world.
The new hub architecture provides significantly faster synchronization between regions, lower latency, more stable audio routing, and dramatically improved handling of large simultaneous operator activity during contests, nets, and major events. During development of the hub system, the engineering team uncovered and resolved a large number of hidden bugs and protocol edge cases that had quietly existed in parts of the HamSphere infrastructure for more than 10 years. Many of these issues only appeared under very specific propagation, network, or timing conditions and had remained dormant since the earliest server generations. The result is a much stronger and more resilient backbone for HamSphere moving forward, capable of handling future expansion, larger events, and increasingly advanced simulation features. Global Server InfrastructureHamSphere currently operates on a distributed international server network with active nodes across Europe and North America:
Note: Server 15 in Sydney, Australia was retired during 2025 due to increased hosting costs. For live server monitoring and current system status: Server Version 133In March and April 2026, HamSphere deployed Server Version 133 across the global infrastructure. This release included major backend optimizations, memory leak fixes, SSL protocol improvements, and extensive reliability work connected to the new Challenge System and Hub Distribution architecture. Version 133 has proven to be the most stable server generation in HamSphere history. Since deployment, uptime has reached record levels with dramatically improved session stability, faster logins, and smoother cross-server communication. By the NumbersSince the launch of HamSphere 5.1, the platform has continued to grow steadily:
HamSphere 5.1 represents a major technological leap forward for virtual HF communication. With stronger infrastructure, enhanced realism, and a rapidly growing ecosystem of awards, challenges, contests, and global events, the future of HamSphere has never looked brighter. HamSphere Remotes (HR) - Continuing EvaluationThe HamSphere Remotes (HR) system continued evolving throughout 2025 and 2026 as part of an ongoing effort to explore shared remote DX operation inside the HamSphere ecosystem. During this period, the HR concept was reopened and redesigned several times under different operational models, booking systems, and access structures. The goal was to create a fair and active environment where operators could experience rare DX locations and realistic HF-style operation from around the world. While the concept generated interest and curiosity, long-term activity levels and operator participation have remained lower than originally anticipated. Usage patterns also showed that HR activity gradually became concentrated within a relatively small group of operators rather than serving the wider HamSphere community as originally intended. These evaluation periods nevertheless provided valuable insight into booking behavior, operational habits, technical requirements, and future possibilities for remote operation inside HamSphere. Current Remote Transceivers
HR Hour SystemThe HR platform currently uses an HR Hour system to regulate access and maintain fair booking availability between operators. Separation rules between sessions and activity-based rewards were introduced during the evaluation process in an attempt to stimulate broader participation and more active operation. Additional HR hours could be obtained through referrals, operational activity, or direct purchase. Future DirectionThe HR concept remains technically interesting and several backend improvements were successfully implemented during the testing period, including stronger booking management, improved server reliability, and refined operational controls. At the same time, the HamSphere team must carefully evaluate whether the current HR concept fulfills its original purpose within the wider operator community. For this reason, the long-term future of the HR system is currently under active review. No final decision has yet been made, but temporary suspension or restructuring of remote operations remains one of several possibilities being considered moving forward. Link to HamSphere Remotes: HamSphere Event Stations - Year in ReviewThroughout 2025 and into 2026, dedicated operators around the world have activated special event stations to commemorate cultural festivals, historical moments, sporting events, and lighthouse operations. Good news for anyone who relies on the DR2W HF Propagation Prediction module for planning their operating sessions. After going offline for a few weeks due to a data delivery issue from its main contributor, the module is back online and running better than ever. Rather than waiting for the original data source to become reliable again, the HamSphere development team made the decision to rewrite the module entirely from scratch. It is now 100% independent of any external contributor, meaning it is no longer vulnerable to third-party outages. The look has been refreshed slightly in the process, but the functionality is solid and performing very well. What It DoesThe DR2W module is a real-time HF propagation prediction tool built directly into HamSphere 5.1. It generates a colour-coded world map showing expected signal strength from a chosen continent, giving operators a clear visual picture of where their signal is likely to travel and how strongly. The map covers signal levels from 20 dB up to 70 dB/Hz, making it easy to identify strong, moderate, and marginal propagation paths at a glance. The module supports:
As an example, the screenshot above shows a European station transmitting on 7.100 MHz at 2000 UTC with 100 watts and an SSN of 143, producing a peak signal footprint of 73 dB/Hz across Europe and reaching deep into Asia and parts of Africa. This kind of overview is exactly what operators need when deciding the best band and time window for a DX contact or a net session. Free to DownloadThe DR2W Propagation module (model MOD006) is available completely free of charge from the HamSphere 5.0 Shop. It is listed under Free Plug-ins and Antennas and can be added to your station with a single click. Download the DR2W Propagation Module from the HamSphere Shop If you are not already using it, now is a great time to add it to your setup. Whether you are chasing DX, planning a net, or simply curious about where your signal is going, the DR2W module is one of the most useful tools in the HamSphere operator's toolkit.

The HamSphere Help Group on 145.5000 MHz is one of the longest-running support nets on the system, now active for over 12 years. Originally focused on the 2m and 40m bands, this friendly group of dedicated operators provides daily assistance, guidance, and conversation for all HamSphere users. The net is kept alive by committed volunteers including Richie 2HS5086, Robert M0RCK, Carl M6LTG, and Sean KJ7EXM, who maintain a welcoming and helpful environment. Whether you're a new user trying to configure your setup, or an experienced operator with technical questions, there's always someone there to lend a hand or offer friendly advice. Join in every day on 145.5000 MHz starting around 16:00 UTC and throughout the evening. There's no formal structure. Just drop in and say hello. You'll likely be greeted by one of the admins or a helpful operator ready to assist with any topic. The team also manages an active Facebook group where users share tutorials, updates, and practical tips to help others get the most from HamSphere 5.1. It's a great place to post questions, get to know fellow users, and stay informed about upcoming activities. What the Group Has Been Up ToOver the past weeks, the Help Group has shown exactly why a community support group matters. The activity has gone well beyond general chat, with a steady flow of real operator questions, practical technical problems, station support, and community guidance. Many posts come from users actively trying to get on the air, solve an issue, understand how HamSphere works, or simply find other operators to contact. A clear theme has been hands-on technical support. Members have asked why HamSphere 5 works on one device but not another, why they hear a buzzing sound, how to correctly set VOX gain and VOX delay, and how to test audio on frequencies such as 145.550 and 50.180. These are exactly the kind of practical day-to-day questions that new and returning operators need help with, and they show the group functioning as a genuine support channel. There has also been notable activity around mobile app access, plugins, and subscriptions. Some users asked why the mobile app was prompting them to purchase plugins they believed they already had, while others needed help renewing a subscription or understanding why a trial had expired. These questions matter because they are often the difference between a frustrated user walking away and an operator being guided confidently back onto the air. Frequency coordination and operating help have also featured strongly. Members have asked where people are active, how to reach specific callsigns, and where to find life on the bands. The group is not only solving technical problems but actively helping operators make real QSOs and find each other within the system. Beyond support, the group carries a strong community feel. Regular welcome posts greet new members, QSO reports are shared, special events are announced, and Malaysian HamSphere activity, challenge links, and remote station information all find a home here. It is a place where operators can ask questions, share experiences, promote activity, and feel part of something larger. What stands out most is how practical and human the activity is. People are asking from real situations at their stations: "Why can't I hear properly?", "How do I renew?", "Why does this not work on my laptop?", "Can someone help me test audio?", "Where is everyone?" That kind of engagement helps operators stay connected, learn the system, and use HamSphere with confidence. If you're looking for real-time help, good conversation, and a warm welcome, this group is your home on the HamSphere bands. Join the Facebook group here: HamSphere Early Bird Net

HamSphere North American Rag Chew Net
The HamSphere North American Rag Chew Net (NET/NARC) is an open and welcoming space for radio operators around the world to connect and share ideas. Held on HamSphere 5.1 every Wednesday and Friday at 01:00 UTC on 434.500 kHz (70CM), this net blends friendly conversation with thought-provoking questions and practical ham radio topics. The net is currently led by Andy (M7SBC), who took over from Wayne (VE3OHS) in mid-2023. Andy has brought renewed consistency and spirit to the net, encouraging participation from all corners of the globe. Aided by the ever-watchful net admin Sue Andy Frost, the sessions remain engaging and inclusive. This is a directed net. Net Control manages proceedings at all times, and only one station transmits at a time. All stations wait to be called by Net Control before speaking. If Net Control becomes unavailable, a designated backup operator steps in. Topics should relate to HamSphere or general radio matters, and all participants are asked to respect Net Control and follow the guidelines so the net runs smoothly for everyone. Recent Net ReportsThe net has been active and well-attended over recent sessions. Here is a summary of check-ins and topics from the past few weeks: 15 May 2026 — Check-ins: KS1K, N2JOA, KC0TDZ, F4BND. The question of the evening asked why some operators hold back during the net and then complain afterwards that they did not get a chance to participate. 08 May 2026 — Check-ins: N2JOA, KS1K, VE3CMT, 2HS8210, KQ4IZD, F4BND. The discussion continued around a recurring theme: operators who receive answers and guidance during the net but then raise identical support tickets with tech support, repeating the same questions that had already been addressed. Net Control noted the importance of listening carefully to advice given on air. 06 May 2026 — Check-ins: KS1K, N2JOA, VE3CMT, KC0TDZ, 2HS22407, 2HS8210, 26HS11679, PY1AFL. Topics included ideas for contests and challenges on the HF bands, and VE3CMT raised a question about the web-based transceiver. 29 April 2026 — Check-ins: KS1K, VE3CMT, N2JOA, KC0TDZ, 2HS22375, OZ1HLT. Discussion touched on logbook practices, with Net Control noting that some operators appear to be changing UTC entries to local time and asking why this happens. The session also raised the broader question of how to sustain HamSphere activity going forward. A Note on Net GuidelinesIn late April, Net Control issued a reminder to all participants about net discipline. The NARC operates as a directed net, and stations are asked to wait their turn, respect Net Control, and keep topics relevant to HamSphere and radio. These guidelines exist to keep the net enjoyable and well-organised for everyone who checks in. All operators are welcome to take the chair, suggest a topic, or just check in and listen. Whether you're brand new to HamSphere or a seasoned regular, the Rag Chew Net offers a relaxed atmosphere to share thoughts and experiences. Net Control is expertly handled by Andy (NET/TOP40), who is currently operating from Brussels, Belgium. As always, NET/TOP40 embraces Near Vertical Incidence Skywave (NVIS) propagation, ideal for regional and mid-range communication. Recommended antennas include the Lazy H and 2-element beam, but any well-tuned setup is welcome. 2026 Early Tour — Around the WorldNET/TOP40 kicked off 2026 with an ambitious early tour covering five locations across Asia and Africa. Starting in February, the net visited Davao City (Philippines), Cape Town (South Africa), Phnom Penh (Cambodia), Kampala (Uganda), and Kathmandu (Nepal) before moving on to the Spring Tour. The Spring Tour then took the net through a series of new locations, concluding with the final week beginning 9 March 2026, broadcast from San Marino, with Net Control Andy at the helm. The tour drew strong participation from operators across Europe and beyond. January NC Challenge — LeaderboardJanuary saw the launch of the NET/TOP40 NC Contact Challenge, with operators competing to make the most first contacts with Net Control. The India DX Net (IDX Net) is a longstanding and well-established net on the HamSphere platform. Since its inception with the launch of HamSphere 4.0 in August 2014, IDX Net has served as a dedicated forum for discussions and exchanges related to HF Radio Propagation, Antennas, weak signal or DX operating procedures, and techniques. It has played a crucial role in disseminating information and bridging the information gap in these areas. The HamSphere India DX Net (IDX Net) connects amateur radio operators with a shared passion for DXing and HF communication. We are excited to announce that IDX Net is now running regularly on HS5, with a change in frequency to 50.173 MHz (6m band). Join us every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 12:00 UTC on the new frequency, where we engage in lively discussions and exchange valuable insights on various aspects of amateur radio. Whether you are an experienced operator or just starting your journey, IDX Net welcomes everyone to participate and contribute. IDX Net remains committed to providing a platform for operators to seek assistance, share experiences, and foster a sense of camaraderie within the amateur radio community. We encourage active participation to make the most of the valuable knowledge and expertise shared during our net sessions. Mark your calendars and tune in to the HamSphere India DX Net on HS5, now on 50.173 MHz (6m band), to connect with fellow operators, explore the world of DXing, and enhance your amateur radio journey. We look forward to hearing you on the net! We solicit participation from all members of the HamSphere community... 73, de Basu VU2NSB. HamSphere 80 Meter Award Net
The 80 Meter Award on HamSphere 5.1 is an exciting challenge for radio operators, featuring a reduced number of worked states compared to its predecessor on HamSphere 4.0. To earn this prestigious award, operators must successfully make contacts with specific states on the 80 meter band, as outlined in the criteria on the Awards page of the HamSphere 5.1 website. The 80 meter band is renowned for its demanding nature, making the achievement of the 80 Meter Award even more prestigious, especially for operators outside the United States. With limited HF propagation on the 80 meter band, operators face unique challenges, requiring exceptional skills and dedication to establish successful contacts. In support of operators striving to earn this award, Larry N8RGO and his team created the 80 Meter Award Net on HamSphere, providing a platform to assist operators in achieving the award by facilitating contacts and fostering a supportive community. Net meetings are held every Monday at 01:00 UTC on 3.750 MHz. The main goal is to bring radio operators and states together, facilitating the attainment of the 80 meter award. All states are encouraged to actively participate, as the more states involved, the easier it becomes for members to progress toward the award. During the net, if check-ins are around 15 or fewer, there is often time for general rag-chew discussion. During summer months attendance may decrease and band conditions can make it harder for stateside stations to reach distant locations, but a regular group of participants always shows up and new members are warmly welcomed. The HamSphere 50+ Club has continued to thrive, growing into a spirited community of over 500 members. Led by Leo (PA0CVE), with the support of Kelly (SM7NHC) and Nico (16HS1033), the club has hosted activations, supported newcomers, and celebrated members' milestones through QSL exchanges and dedicated on-air activities. World Activation — 17 May 2026Mark your calendar and make sure you don't miss this one. On 17 May 2026, the HamSphere 50+ Club is holding its International World Activation, and it promises to be one of the biggest events in the club's history. This is a worldwide call to all 50+ Club members and HamSphere operators to get on the air together and celebrate the launch of the new HamSphere 50+ Club in style. The activation has been announced across the community with great enthusiasm by Leo and Nico, and the message is simple: Don't miss it. Whether you are a long-standing club member or have been thinking about getting more involved, this is the perfect opportunity to get on the air, work as many stations as possible, collect QSL cards, and be part of a truly international event. The activation is open to all HamSphere operators. Club stations will be active across the bands, and participants are encouraged to work as many of them as possible and submit QSL card proofs toward their certificates. This event also marks the formal launch of the renewed and restructured HamSphere 50+ Club, making it a historic moment for the community. Nico (16HS1033) from Belgium has been among the most active voices promoting the activation, spreading the word across the HamSphere community and encouraging everyone to participate. Leo (PA0CVE) and the club team have put significant effort into making this a memorable day on the air for operators of all backgrounds. So clear your schedule for 17 May 2026, fire up your HamSphere station, and join operators from around the world for the International 50+ Club World Activation. Worldwide friendship through the airwaves — that is what the 50+ Club is all about. Previous ActivationsThe April world activation earlier this year saw participation from 11 dedicated club stations. Many operators worked all 11 stations and submitted QSL card proofs to earn their recognition. Operators such as Phil G0CLT, Ivars YL3ARS, and Theo 19AT199 reported strong engagement and camaraderie, making it one of the club's most memorable events of the season. Growing CommunityThe club has welcomed many new members, with operators like Steve (169HS120), Dale (26HS575), and Patrick (Belfast) sharing their stories of returning to the hobby or rediscovering HamSphere after years away. Special recognition has also been given to Roger Berwanger, who rekindled his passion for radio decades after operating with his father, W3JS, in the 1950s. Support and community spirit remain at the heart of the group. Whether it's creating new personal QSL cards for returning members like Michael Murray (M3IKE124) or discussing QSL design variations like the beloved palm trees at sunset, the 50+ Club continues to show what radio friendship is all about. The group's Facebook group remains the central hub for news, QSL coordination, and social exchange. Members are encouraged to join, share, and participate in upcoming activities and certificate challenges.
These are the certificates you can obtain with confirmed QSOs with the original 50+ QSL cards:

These cherished operators have recently gone silent on the airwaves. Each made a unique mark on the HamSphere community through conversations, kindness, and camaraderie. Their spirits live on in every contact, every signal, and every memory shared. We honor them with gratitude and love. W2REY - RAY (US)The HamSphere community has lost one of its longtime voices on the bands. Ray, W2REY, has gone Silent Key. Ray became a HamSphere member on 23 April 2010 — 16 years ago — and was known by many operators for his warm personality, steady activity on 40 meters, and his familiar presence around 7050 kc. Over the years he made countless friendships across the world and collected many QSL cards from operators who appreciated his kindness and good spirit on the air. In 2017, Ray wrote to HamSphere expressing his wish to become an Elmer within the system. He spoke about helping operators when support was needed and believed strongly in keeping the community welcoming, active, and supportive for everyone. Those words reflected the kind of operator Ray truly was. Only days ago, on May 10, Ray contacted us for a reactivation of his account, and we were happy to welcome him back onto the air once again. None of us imagined that his return would become his final sign-on. To many, Ray was simply part of the sound of HamSphere itself. His voice, friendship, and presence on the bands will be remembered for many years to come. Our deepest condolences go out to Ray's family, friends, and fellow operators around the world. 73 Ray. CU on the other side. — Kelly Lindman, SM7NHC, Founder, HamSphere M3UIP - JOHN (United Kingdom)John joined HamSphere on 13 May 2008, making him one of the longer-serving members of the community with nearly 18 years on the platform. He was active right up to February 2026, and his last words on the system captured his practical spirit well — noting that HamSphere would come in handy whenever putting up antennas wasn't possible. A thoughtful and forward-looking operator, John will be missed by all who knew him on the bands. 73 John. Silent Key. 1HS8963 - PAOLO (Italy)Paolo joined HamSphere on 11 April 2016 and remained an active member of the community for nearly a decade. A mobile operator who stayed connected even on the go, his last activity on the platform was on 24 December 2025 — Christmas Eve — a fitting reminder of the dedication he brought to the hobby right until the end. 73 Paolo. Silent Key. W0PEY - EUGENE KESSLER (United States)Eugene joined HamSphere on 18 November 2010, becoming part of the community in its early years and remaining a valued presence for 15 years. Based in Texas, his last session on the air was on 29 October 2025. Those who shared the bands with Eugene will remember him as a familiar and welcome voice. 73 Eugene. Silent Key. 2HS2108 - RON (United States)Ron joined HamSphere on 31 December 2017 — ringing in the new year as a new member — and was based in Oregon. He remained active on the platform for nearly eight years, with his last time on the air recorded on 4 August 2025. Ron will be remembered warmly by those who crossed his path on the bands. 73 Ron. Silent Key. F6EJI - MARC (France)Marc joined HamSphere on 28 March 2016 and was an active member of the 50+ group, bringing camaraderie and experience to that corner of the community. He remained on the air for nearly a decade, with his last activity recorded on 3 July 2025. Marc's presence among his fellow operators will be fondly remembered. 73 Marc. Silent Key. May the silence they leave behind remind us of the value in every voice that calls CQ. 73 and goodbye, dear friends. The HamSphere 48m Broadcast Band
The 48 meter band has long been associated with free radio and pirate broadcasting, particularly across Europe. Since the 1970s, independent broadcasters have used the 6200-6300 kHz shortwave range to transmit alternative voices, music, and messages far beyond their borders, often defying national radio monopolies and delivering culture across the static. In honor of this romantic and rebellious tradition, HamSphere introduced its own virtual 48m band over 17 years ago. With realistic 48m propagation modeling, this unique segment of the HamSphere 5.1 system allows shortwave broadcasters to simulate the magic of real-world skywave transmission without needing transmitters, antennas, or even a license. Today, dozens of virtual shortwave stations enjoy operating in this space, creating scheduled programs and spontaneous music shows that echo the golden era of European pirate radio. Interested in Broadcasting?Any HamSphere subscriber can apply for a dedicated RADIO_XXXX callsign and a fixed frequency between 6201 and 6295 kHz. Once approved, you'll receive your own virtual broadcast license and the tools needed to operate on the 48m band, including a special BC Plugin with RF signal boost and announcement tools.
