Dear HamSphere Operators,

If you are experiencing difficulty finding activity on HamSphere's HF bands, it is important to gain a solid understanding of HF radio propagation. HF propagation refers to the behavior of radio waves as they travel from one point on Earth to another or interact with different layers of the atmosphere. Several factors influence HF propagation, including solar activity, time of day, and atmospheric conditions.

Solar Activity:

The level of solar activity plays a crucial role in signal strength and range. Higher solar activity can lead to improved signal performance, while lower solar activity can lead to signal degradation.

Time of Day:

HF bands often exhibit better propagation during nighttime hours, particularly on lower frequencies. This phenomenon occurs because ionospheric layers tend to be more stable and less absorptive during nighttime.

Atmospheric Conditions:

Weather conditions, such as thunderstorms, can introduce interference and reduce signal quality. Conversely, stable high-pressure systems can enhance signal propagation.

Check the DX-Cluster:

Always ensure to monitor the DX-Cluster by clicking on "Log-Book." This feature provides real-time updates on active stations, helping you identify available communication opportunities.

Start with VHF/UHF:

To become familiar with HamSphere's operation, consider focusing initially on the 6m, 2m, and 70cm bands before venturing into HF propagation.

Use DX-Mon Switch:

Activate the DX-Mon switch to access listening stations worldwide. By transmitting on any band, you can assess the signal level at which you are heard from various locations.

HF Propagation Prediction:

Utilize VOACAP (https://voacap.com/hf) to make HF propagation predictions for all bands based on your specific location (QTH). This tool helps you determine which bands are likely to be open at different times.
